KUMASI, GHANA — The Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) is partnering with Google for Education to deploy Google Gemini artificial-intelligence tools across its university community, potentially giving 95,000 students, academic staff and administrative staff access to Gemini and Gemini Notebook.
The partnership, announced by KNUST through its University Relations Office on 29 August 2026, is being led through the University’s E-Learning Centre and represents a major expansion of artificial intelligence within the institution’s teaching, learning, research and administrative environment.
Under the agreement, Google will provide 95,000 Google Workspace for Education Fundamentals licences. The licences will provide eligible members of the KNUST community with access to Gemini and Gemini Notebook, bringing generative AI tools into the university’s existing digital ecosystem.
KNUST says the initiative is intended to strengthen its digital learning infrastructure and support the use of AI in teaching, learning, research and administrative workflows. The development places AI more directly within the everyday academic and institutional activities of one of Ghana’s leading science and technology universities.
Access Through Existing KNUST Credentials
The University’s University Information Technology Services (UITS) has configured directory integration and Single Sign-On (SSO) to allow members of the university community to access the Google services using their existing KNUST credentials rather than creating separate accounts.
The technical implementation has involved Mr Emmanuel Afful, Director of UITS, with technical leadership provided by Mr Richard Kason Ansah, System Analyst and Head of Systems.
KNUST says the Gemini and Gemini Notebook services are being provided under Google’s Core Services framework. According to the university, this framework means institutional research data, student records and operational data are not used to train public AI models, while access is restricted to authorised members of the university community
Training Before Wider Adoption
The partnership is also accompanied by a capacity-building programme designed to help faculty and technical personnel use the technology effectively.
KNUST says virtual training sessions for faculty members are scheduled to begin in late September 2026, followed by an in-person Gemini Academy in November 2026. The academy is expected to train selected educators and technical staff on integrating AI into teaching and research.
The university and Google are additionally working on the integration of Gemini into KNUST’s Moodle-based Learning Management System (LMS). If implemented, the integration would bring AI capabilities closer to the university’s existing online teaching and learning environment.
AI, Research and Student Innovation
Beyond classroom applications, the partnership is positioned to support research and innovation. KNUST’s E-Learning Centre says the initiative is intended to transform teaching, learning, research and innovation through the adoption of advanced Google AI tools.
The collaboration also includes opportunities for eligible student entrepreneurs and founders to access the Google for Startups Cloud Program and Google Cloud credits, potentially providing technological resources for students developing technology-based projects and businesses.
The collaboration was initiated and led by Ing. Prof. Emmanuel Kofi Akowuah, Director of the KNUST E-Learning Centre. He said the partnership would support KNUST’s efforts to transform teaching, learning, research and innovation through the adoption of cutting-edge Google AI tools.
A Major AI Move for Ghanaian Higher Education
The planned deployment gives KNUST one of the more extensive institution-wide AI arrangements reported by a Ghanaian university, with the stated licence provision covering 95,000 members of its academic and administrative community. Rather than treating generative AI solely as an optional external tool, the partnership seeks to embed AI within institutional systems, staff development and the university’s digital learning infrastructure. For students and researchers, the significance could extend beyond using AI for generating text. The university’s stated areas of application include research, learning, teaching, innovation and entrepreneurship, while the planned Moodle integration could connect AI capabilities with the institution’s established online learning environment.
The rollout also comes as universities globally continue to confront questions surrounding responsible AI use, academic integrity, data protection and the appropriate role of generative AI in education. KNUST’s emphasis on institutional access, training and its stated data protections therefore forms an important part of the university’s approach to the technology.
