The initiative, announced by Google on 20 August 2026, is designed to support students with coursework, research, examination preparation, academic organisation and skills development as artificial intelligence becomes increasingly integrated into education and the workplace.
Google’s Managing Director for Africa, Alex Okosi, announced the student initiative as part of the company’s continuing efforts to expand digital learning and innovation across the continent. Google said the offer is intended to help students make better use of AI while navigating assignments, projects, examinations, research and other demands of tertiary education.
The programme provides eligible students with one year of Google AI Plus free of charge, including access to Gemini Omni, twice the standard Gemini usage limits and 400 GB of cloud storage across Google Drive, Google Photos and Gmail.
Ghana is among the 27 Sub-Saharan African countries covered by the student offer.
The participating countries are Angola, Benin, Botswana, Burkina Faso, Cabo Verde, Cameroon, Côte d’Ivoire, Gabon, Ghana, Guinea-Bissau, Kenya, Mali, Mauritius, Mozambique, Namibia, Niger, Nigeria, Rwanda, Senegal, Seychelles, Sierra Leone, South Africa, Tanzania, Togo, Uganda, Zambia and Zimbabwe.
The expansion gives the initiative a broad Pan-African reach, extending beyond the continent’s largest technology markets to students in several smaller and emerging higher education systems.
AI TO BECOME A NEW STUDY COMPANION
Google has also introduced a dedicated Gemini Student Hub, bringing several AI-powered study tools together in one environment.
Through the Student Hub, students can create study notebooks, generate flashcards, take practice quizzes and organise their academic activities. Google says the platform is intended to provide students with a central place to access learning tools throughout the academic year.
The Study Notebooks feature allows students to upload their own course materials, including lecture notes and other learning resources. Gemini can then use those materials to create structured learning plans, identify areas where students may have knowledge gaps and generate personalised lessons and quizzes.
Google says the system can also help students keep track of important academic dates. With the student’s permission, key dates such as examination dates and assignment deadlines contained in a syllabus can be added to Google Calendar.
The new tools extend beyond conventional text-based AI assistance.
Google has introduced interactive visualisations capable of generating functional 3D simulations, tables and other visual elements to help students understand complex subjects. The company gives examples including three-dimensional explanations of DNA and interactive representations of scientific and business concepts.
The tools are intended for students across disciplines, including science, engineering, economics and medicine, where complex concepts can sometimes be easier to understand through visual and interactive learning.
Another major feature is Deep Research in Gemini Live. Students can use conversational interaction to launch multi-step research reports and continue discussing the results once the research has been completed. Google says the process can continue in the background, allowing students to leave the application and receive a notification when their report is ready.
For tertiary students involved in academic research, the development could provide another tool for exploring research questions, reviewing information and developing a deeper understanding of unfamiliar subjects.
Google says the initiative is not limited to examination preparation. The company views AI as increasingly relevant to both education and employment, with students expected to develop the ability to use emerging technologies responsibly.
The platform can support students as they work with course materials, explore new subjects, develop research ideas and prepare for future careers.
Alex Okosi said higher education requires students to conduct research, solve complex problems and continuously develop new skills, adding that Google wants more African students to have access to resources that can help them explore ideas, build knowledge and prepare for the future.
The development comes at a time when universities across Africa are increasingly confronting questions about how generative AI should be used in teaching, research, assessment and academic work.
